Humayun, son of Babar, father of Akbar, was the second of the great Mughal emperors. On 24 January 1556, Humayun, with his arms full of books, fell to his death while descending the staircase from his library. Humayun’s tomb was commissioned and supervised by the emperor’s first wife Bega Begum. A World Heritage Site Monument right in the heart of New Delhi, this monument is a landmark in the evolution of the Indo-Islamic style of architecture. This mausoleum was the first garden tomb in India and is surrounded by a four square Mughal gardens known as Charbagh.
