Phads are huge textile screens, which serve as backdrops for night-long musical soirees called jagaran.
They are like portable temples for nomadic tribal audiences and are presided over by a priestly caste known as Bhopas, who are also the traditional guardians of the Phads. Using natural colours, the artwork is executed by a master artist and his family. Nowadays, scaled-down versions are being commissioned by private collectors.
