The tradition of Madhubani paintings has been kept alive through the centuries by the women of Madhubani and other areas of Mithila in Bihar. The paintings, made on the walls of mud huts, depict Hindu religious motifs. Characterized by line drawings filled in with bright colours, these paintings are now done on handmade paper, cloth, and canvas. The colours used are natural and derived from owners, vegetables, turmeric, and lamp black.
