Intricate and elaborate, Pichwais are large-sized paintings that are hung behind the idol of Lord Shrinathji in the Nathdwara temple, in Rajasthan. The word Pichwai comes from the Sanskrit words Pich - behind, wai - hanging textile. With its roots in miniature painting, Pichwais emerged in 17th-century Nathdwara. A Pichwai typically has drawings of Shrinathji.
Seen here are the cows that accompany him in most of the paintings.
