This centuries-old tradition was kept alive by the women of Madhubani and Mithila in Bihar. The paintings are characterised by line drawings filled in with bright colours. Traditionally painted on mud walls, using pigments from flowers, vegetables, turmeric, and lamp black, they are now done on handmade paper, cloth and canvas.
