Intricate and elaborate, Pichwais are large sized paintings that are hung behind the idol of Lord Shrinathji in the Nathdwara temple, Rajasthan. The word Pichwai comes from the Sanskrit word Pich - behind, Wai - hanging textiles. With its roots in miniature painting, Pichwais emerged in 17th century Nathdwara.
A Pichwai painting is often a group effort, where several skilful painters work together under the supervision of a master artist.
