Migrant patua, or scroll painters, converged around Kalighat temple in Kolkata, early in the 18th century to give rise to a new school. For more than a hundred years the pilgrims offered a ready market for the pat as souvenirs. Pat pain ngs were originally rendered with bold rapid brush strokes on hand made co on pulp paper. Natural colours were used. Increasing demand led the ar sts to adapt lithography and ar cial colours. A majority of the Kalighat pat treated religious and traditional subjects, but the introduction of secular themes is of great interest now.
A part of our Kalighat Pat art collection - this Radha Krishna was drawn by artist Noordin.
