Migrant patuas, or scroll painters, wandered from village to village as storytellers. They would sing along as they rolled out painted panels of mythological scenes. Early in the 19th century, some converged on Kolkata’s Kalighat temple and gave rise to a new school of art with scaled-down versions of the scrolls.
